Big Events on Small Budgets

Over the course of my work in the non-profit sector, I've discovered it's full of hard-working individuals who are PR powerhouses and don't even know it. Operating with practically no budget, Christine Geoffrion, manager of information services at Volunteer & Information Quinte (VIQ) is putting together the seventh annual Ladies Charity Golf Tournament where ladies have a chance to WIN A CAR! Other great activities lined up for the lucky ladies include mini-spa treatments courtesy of The Body Shop and a good dose of the "hard stuff' from Woody's Coolers: Hopefully the hubbies are planning their own dinners for that night. From VIQ's base in Belleville, Christine is information specialist, fundraising coordinator, events manager, media spokesperson, communications officer and more. I'd take my hat off to her, but she'd probably pick it up!

Canadian Cartoons Save Lives

Marketing is powerful, but the real power of PR is the ability to affect people's lives. Canadian cartoons (public health announcements) starring three condom characters "The Three Amigos" are taking the world by storm. Translated into a multitude of languages, these illustrations reach the root of problems that aid organizations have been battling for decades, providing an educational tool to save lives. This is PR to be applauded, with innovative use of media, targeted communications, and a resulting public benefit. Oh yeah, business also wins: Condom sales increased by millions :)

PR For The Planet

Outside of this site I usually TRY to keep my opinions to myself. Recently though I found it necessary to defend Al Gore's "Inconvenient Truth" Like the man or not, he has given environmental issues a place on the world stage, and reached an audience who previously ignored environmental experts. In fact, I even saw David Suzuki and Stephen Harper on "Entertainment Tonight" thanks to Mr. Gore's celebrity status; talk about getting coverage! My personal endorsement on Al's PR for the planet resulted in two-cents worth of ink, and my "letter to the editor" was printed in yesterday's Hastings edition of The Shield. I will continue to fight the good fight from my little corner of the world and hope everyone has a planet-friendly weekend :)

PR people hard at work

While my colleagues have been busy doing great work and securing paycheques, I have been using my PR talents to the benefit of local communities. As well as interning with Volunteer & Information Quinte (VIQ) who support the efforts of many non-profit groups around Belleville, I have been assisting other community-based groups in getting their organization off the ground, fine-tuning their strategy, and developing communication materials. I am confident that destiny will not allow me to starve while I help others, and that all the networking and pro-bono work I am doing will finally pay the bills. Thanks to Kerry and Loyalist for giving me the tools I need :)

Happy Days

Spring always brings a new feeling of freshness in the air. I am making a committment to report news that breathes new life into our everyday lives (instead of my usual rant that nobody cares about). Charity events are in full swing right now and we can all do our part by coming out to enjoy the great weather while supporting community events. By all means read the dailies, but check your local listings too and see what you can become directly involved with in your local community. Tomorrow, I will be riding the Big Bike for Heart & Stroke. Happy Spring.
